What is Thyroid Based Hair Loss?
Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are the two hormones the thyroid gland releases. Due to an imbalance or disruption in the production of these hormones, multiple body processes are affected. One of these processes is the development of hair from its roots. Hair loss due to the thyroid occurs when the hair falls out, and there is no replacement of it by new hair growth due to an imbalance in the hormonal levels.Â
Causes of Thyroid-Based Hair Loss
In addition to development, thyroid hormones also ensure the maintenance of hair follicles. Follicles refer to small pockets present under the skin from where the hairs grow. The causes which lead to such hair loss from thyroid conditions are-Â
- Hypothyroidism
It occurs when there is a release of insufficient amounts of thyroid hormones from an underactive thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the gland produces too many hormones. The derangement of thyroid hormones due to hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism causes hair fall and alopecia.
- Alopecia
It refers to an autoimmune condition that occurs associated with thyroid disorders. It causes patches of hair loss in different areas of the body.Â
Remedies to Prevent Thyroid-Based Hair Fall
Such commonly used thyroid hair loss remedies are-Â
- Boosting Iron IntakeÂ
As per recent research, thyroid disorders affect the body’s ferritin levels. The iron stores in our body are closely associated with ferritin levels, and low ferritin levels directly contribute to patterned hair loss. Therefore, it is essential to check the iron and ferritin levels and use supplements per the doctor’s suggestions.Â
- Addition of Anti-inflammatory Foods and a Balanced Diet
Ginger and turmeric are both examples of anti-inflammatory foods that enhance endocrines’ functioning in our bodies. The thyroid gland is an integral part of the endocrine system. Addition of anti-inflammatory foods to ensure a balanced diet can help treat thyroid disorders.Â
- Thyroid Medications
There are medications to supplement insufficient thyroid hormone production. However, these drugs must be taken only after consulting your doctor.
