What is Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that can be invasive or minimally invasive. The hair follicles of one body area (donor zone) are extracted and transplanted in an area affected by hair loss. Hair transplants have been there for years, have evolved, and are more effective with new technologies making hair transplants easier and more successful. The most effective techniques for hair transplant are Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both hair transplant procedures are safe and effective for severe hair loss for both men and women and help regain lost confidence.

Which is the best hair transplant technique?

There are 2 widely used hair transplants in Pune, and different cities in India, which are FUT and FUE. Both techniques offer successful desirable natural results.

FUE

Follicular Unit Extraction is considered the best hair transplant technique as it is minimally invasive and does not leave any visible scar after the procedure. It is a more advanced form of hair transplant technique where the patient’s head is shaved, and the follicular grafts are extracted individually using U.S. patented punches. These punch sizes are between 0.8mm to 1mm, making tiny circular incisions in the donor area to extract the hair follicles individually. These grafts are extremely delicate and must be stored carefully while the surgeon preps the recipient area. Grafts are carefully implanted once the slits are made on the recipient area.

FUT

The follicular unit transplant is the traditional strip extraction hair transplant procedure. The surgeon makes a linear cut at the back of the scalp, the donor region, to remove a linear strip of 4-6 inches. The strip is then split into 500-2000 sections and prepped for implantation into the thinning or balding areas. This type of hair transplant is fairly invasive, involves stitches, can be painful and leaves a permanent visible scar behind the scalp. The donor hair for the extraction procedure can only be obtained from the back of the scalp. If the patient does not have sufficient follicular grafts in the donor zone, then this surgery cannot be performed.

Benefits of FUE hair transplant

The benefits of FUE hair transplant are:

  • Healthy hair follicles implanted: After the individual hair follicles are extracted, the follicles are examined under magnification, and only healthy hair follicles are implanted in the recipient area.
  • Minimal scarring: FUE scars are tiny, making them difficult to spot.
  • Body donor hair: In the FUE technique, if the patient does not have sufficient hair follicles at the back of the scalp, follicles can be extracted from the beard and chest.
  • Fast recovery: Unlike FUT, the FUE process does not involve sutures, and therefore patients can return to their normal activities in a few days. Being a minimally invasive procedure, the pain after surgery is much less compared to the FUT procedure.

Conclusion

Among these, the dermatologist can only determine which techniques will best suit your condition after examining your scalp. The hair transplant surgeons will check the density and quality of your existing hair follicles in the donor area. After performing various tests, the shedding pattern of the recipient area is determined, and the patient is informed about the right surgical procedure for them. Every procedure has some pros and cons, and therefore determining which will be the best hair transplant technique is difficult. The implantation method for both FUE and FUT is the same and gives desirable fuller head results within 12-18 months from the surgery.

HairMD is a well-reputed clinic for hair transplant in Pune, offering the right diagnosis to the patients, which will further help them make an informed decision before choosing the techniques for hair transplant.
