Effects of Lack of Sleep on Hair
There are various cycles that human bodies go through during the sleep process that help in strengthening stem cell activities that are essential for hair growth. Hence, there can be significant consequences of lack of sleep causing hair loss.Â
- Decreased Production of the Hormone Melatonin
Human bodies secrete the hormone melatonin, which regulates cellular growth, including hair growth. Sleep has a direct link with the production of this hormone, which means that lack of sleep will produce less melatonin resulting in hair loss.
- Stress
Stress and lack of sleep can land a patient in telogen effluvium, which is a condition where a good percentage of hair follicles suddenly enter resting and falling phases. The primary reason for this is that because of stress and tiredness, the body starts providing nutrients and essential growth factors to vital organs while hair prematurely falls, causing hair loss. Â
The Best Way to Improve Sleep Quality
To ensure quality sleep, follow the following tips:
- Set a suitable temperature in your rest area. (around 21-24 degrees C)
- Drink a cup of warm chamomile tea or hot water for about 45 minutes before going to bed to relax your body.
- Stop using your phone and other screens at least 1 hour before starting to rest.
- Sleep in a dark bedroom.
- Do not take a nap for longer than 15-30 minutes during the day.Â
- Arrange the mattress, blanket, and pillow appropriately, making you feel comfortable when falling asleep.
- Maintain a consistent bedtime and waking times because hair growth depends on your circadian clock to activate.Â
Ways to Improve Hair Health
Follow the tips for healthy hair-Â
- Having Proper Diet
A crucial part of improving your hair is controlling what you eat. Your diet must be rich in foods containing vitamins like A, B, and C and micronutrients like iron and zinc. It is also essential to consume food rich in proteins like meat, eggs or paneer and also antioxidants like leafy vegetables, berries and nuts. These fruits and vegetables are the keys to maintaining your hair’s health and retaining its shine.Â
- Keep Your Mental Health in Check
Hair loss can be a result of increased levels of stress. And the best way to deal with it is by taking adequate steps to maintain your mental health. You can do this by practising yoga, taking therapy classes, and meditating.Â
- Silk or Satin Pillows Covers
The presence of silk fibres is very helpful for reducing the friction that occurs between hair and the pillowcase while you sleep. It reduces frizz and avoids breakage. On the other hand, cotton pillows take away the moisture present in your hair and make them frizzy and dry, so it is always advisable to use a satin or silk pillow, especially if you have curly hair.Â
