When is Hair Fall Excessive?
We do lose 100 strands each day. But, if you notice an increase in hair loss, a receding hairline or hair breaking easily, you know it’s time to take action.
Hair loss, receding hairline, bald patches, hair thinning are concerns shared by many men and women. It is caused by a range of factors that are out of your immediate control – genetics, diseases, etc., and others that you can beat with home remedies, medicines, and more.
Let’s have a look at a few reasons why you’re losing your hair:
1.Diet
Our meals are supposed to be a balance of nutrients, but more often than not, we miss out on essential nutrients like zinc, iron, proteins, Vitamin D, etc.
2.Water quality
Your water supply is a big reason, and you’re probably losing hair! Hard water contains an alarmingly high number of chemicals harmful to your scalp. A rigorous check will give you a solution – adding a softener to the water is a sure-shot answer.
3.Medical conditions
Hormonal imbalance in women, thyroid, genetics, etc. would require medicines and an introduction to treatments that will definitely prevent hair loss in the future.
4.Hair styling
The hair gel, the blow dryer, and the shampoo – all of them can be culprits of hair fall and hair thinning. The products constitute many chemicals that damage hair follicles and make your hair limp & lifeless.
5.Stress
The most dangerous of them all, in all its forms, stress leads to excessive pressure on your hair follicles which gives you hair thinning, bald patches, and hair loss in both men and women.
Sit back and observe the pattern of how you’re losing hair. Once you have a clear picture, you will know how to tackle the problem.
Home Remedies to Stop Hair Loss in Men and Women?
Here are a few home remedies to prevent excessive hair loss:
Massage with coconut oil
The go-to solution for so many things, coconut oil has nutritional properties like lauric acid that makes inroads into your hair shaft, adding a much-needed protein boost to it. These nutrients also have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal benefits and eliminate the dirt left behind by chemical shampoos and daily activities.
Massage the oil gently into your hair, and let it sit for a few hours or overnight.
Use it once-twice a week.
Another option would be to use coconut milk, in case your hair is dry. The milk will nourish and moisturise your hair with the right amount of nutrition.
Aloe vera mask
Aloe vera, called a healing plant, contains nutrients such as Vitamin C, B12 etc., it also has several fatty acids that promote healthy hair growth.
Divide your hair into sections
Apply fresh or store-bought aloe vera to your scalp
Let it stay for 45 minutes, and then wash it off thoroughly
You can mix other ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil, apple cider vinegar or even yogurt to make the aloe vera mask even more effective!
Honey & ghee mask
Ghee has nutrients such as Vitamin D, and A that aid the body and hair. Honey plays the role of a moisturizer in this mask. This mask is definitely a must for hair fall!
Take 3-4 tablespoons of ghee and 2 tablespoons of honey
Mix them well and apply the mixture directly to your scalp
Leave it on for a few hours
Wear a shower mask
Rinse it off thoroughly
Once in 2 weeks is good, more than that could lead to oily scalps and build-up
Onion Juice Mask
The latest natural trend for hair care? Onions. The juice is derived from the peels, and it contains Vitamin C & E, B etc. All of which promote shinier, healthier hair, and bid goodbye to worries of hair loss.
Grind the onion, squeeze out the juice
Use a small cotton pad to dab the juice all over your scalp
Leave it on for 20-30 minutes
Use a shower cap, since the odour is very pungent
Wash it off well
Use castor oil, honey, lavender oil etc., to mask the scent and increase the hair mask’s benefits. Or, better yet, use onion oil!
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
The apple cider vinegar contains acids that help maintain the pH balance of your scalp, cleaning the dirt & grime, retaining the texture of your hair, and paving the way for better hair growth.
ACV has a high content of acid, so it must be diluted before use
Use 1 part ACV for 3 parts of water
Shampoo and condition your hair
Pour the ACV into your hair slowly, getting to all parts
You can choose to rinse it off or let it stay & dry out
Three Tips to Keep in Mind:
Drink water
– 3 liters for men, 2 liters for women. This assists in keeping your hair shaft hydrated and healthy.
Eat balanced meals
– Ensure you have a good amount of proteins in the form of eggs, fish, tofu, cottage cheese etc., to prevent
Include de-stressing activities
– Balancing your emotions through breathing exercises, yoga can help reduce stress and hence, hair fall too.
When Should You Visit a Doctor?
Treatment plans the doctor might recommend are:
Medications
A combination of oral medicines like Finasteride and Minoxidil, lifestyle changes, shampoos & creams prove to be a solution for hair loss.
Laser
Laser therapies are conducted over a period of time, pumping the hair follicles with energy, stimulating them to perform better. These treatments are good for male & female pattern baldness or reversing hair thinning & loss.
Hair transplant surgery
Hair follicles that are active and growing are transplanted into areas lacking, promoting hair growth. Used for bald patches and male pattern baldness.
PRP and l light therapy
With the advent of new technology, with PRP (platelet-rich plasma therapy) doctors draw concentrated nutrients from the blood and deliver it to the scalp; LLT (Low Light Therapy) induces hair growth by restoring the hair follicles by use of red cold laser.
